Poll: Ron Paul holds steady, Newt Gingrich plummets

Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX), a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, climbed into second at the national level Tuesday. Mr. Paul tied former House Speaker Newt Gingrich for second place in an ABC News/Washington Post poll of leaned Republicans with 16 percent of the votes each.

Mr. Paul has come a long way since a December poll of leaned Republicans. Although Mr. Paul had nearly the same percentage of the votes in December, the Texas congressman sat in third place with a margin of 15 percentage points between himself and Mr. Gingrich. One month later, Mr. Gingrich’s support has dipped 14 percentage points.

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney is firmly in first place with 36 percent of the votes. Mr. Romney leads Mr. Paul and Mr. Gingrich by 20 percentage points. Mr. Romney’s lead in South Carolina is as impressible as his lead at the national level. According to a Monmouth University poll, released Tuesday, Mr. Romney is 11 percentage points ahead of the nearest challenger in the Palmetto State.

Although Mr. Paul is miles away from Mr. Romney in South Carolina and at the national level, the former Air Force surgeon has vowed to chip away at the Bain Capital co-founder’s support in the key states of Nevada and Maine, after deciding to skip Florida.

“We’re a delegate-focused campaign. We’re focused on winning the 1,150 delegates to secure the nomination. And the amount of resources and time it would take to compete for those 50 delegates just didn’t make sense to us,” Ron Paul 2012 National Campaign Chairman Jesse Benton said Sunday, January 8th in an email obtained by the National Journal.

“Our campaign will focus financial resources on South Carolina, Nevada, Maine and other states heading into Super Tuesday,” Mr. Benton added.

The ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted from January 12th to January 15th among 1,000 voters. The poll has a margin or error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
